I got one! I didn’t think I’d get to try the infamous Popeye’s sandwich until it returned in a couple months, but today was my lucky day. If you haven’t heard about this chicken sandwich and the long lines and frenzy that have surrounded it, then just do some internet searching to be enlightened. The memes have been my favorite part. The sandwich launched with very little fanfare, but people started comparing it to everyone’s favorite chicken sandwich chain, so the attention skyrocketed and Popeye’s announced this week that they would run out a month earlier than anticipated.
Today I was out with the kiddos and decided to call the local Popeye’s. Surprisingly, they answered (I figured they wouldn’t with all of the crazy customers). I asked, “Are you out of chicken sandwiches?” The reply was, “Around noon.” I took that to mean that they had sandwiches but they would be out by noon. So I got in the line and ordered my sandwich only to be told that the filets were currently frozen and would not be available until noon. (Cue the “This would never happen at…” 🤣) So I ran an errand and returned at noon hoping for the best. They had sandwiches! I got the spicy version because regular mayo sounded boring. And no pickles of course ( I know this is a STRONG debate, but I don’t like warm pickles on sandwiches).
So how was it? It was delicious, and about what I expected. I prefer Popeye’s to KFC, Church’s, etc. so I’m already a fan of the breading and flavor. That Popeye’s taste was the base flavor of this sandwich. It was really the spicy mayo that made it what it was. I’ve always been a fan of the sauces at Popeye’s. They bring that extra level of flavor that I’m usually looking for. (We can talk about my philosophy on sauces later.) Without the spicy mayo, it would still be tasty, but wouldn’t necessarily stand out from other Popeye’s offerings. You could take some spicy tenders and put them on a bun and I’d be just as satisfied. All that to say is, I won’t be giving up on my favorite chicken sandwich chain, but I will grab another one when they return, and if it sticks around, it’ll be my go-to if we eat at Popeye’s in the future.
